This technical brief asks to develop a design proposal for Cornish cold-water surfing brand – ‘Finisterre’. I proposed a shipping container that aims to be of temporary nature and lends itself to travel to different locations. The Finisterre brand is orientated around performance, lifestyle & adventure, they pride themselves on uncompromising on good, authentic quality.
I have interpreted the brief by responding to Finisterre’s methodology of which is ‘design for cold water surfers’. This came to be my starting point, and so I propose a design that is purpose built for the beach and offers cold water surfers the opportunity to change before & after surfs. It features a self- supporting hanging fireplace, which plays on the historic ‘fires on the beach’, and gives the chance to get a cup of tea. Being exposed to the merchandise in its intended setting, this will ultimately allow people to realise the demand for such CWS product.
The design consists of two containers, one ‘wet’, one ‘dry’- determined by a considered palette of materials. I am orientating my concept on sustainability and authenticity, both of which are main focus points of Finisterre. I propose cor-ten steel that responds to the existing container shell within parts of the interior, meanwhile using reclaimed timbers and slates. The remaining majority revolves around recycling shipping palettes, utilizing them in different forms, acting as furniture, wall cladding and display units.
